What Does the flag: Ireland Emoji 🇮🇪 Mean?

Vertical green, white, and orange form the Irish tricolor. Green represents the Gaelic-Catholic Irish tradition, orange honors the Protestant population (after William of Orange), and the white between them symbolizes the peace and unity between the two communities. Designed by Thomas Francis Meagher in 1848 and modeled on the French tricolore, it was adopted at the founding of the Irish Free State in 1922.

The emoji floods feeds during St. Patrick's Day (March 17), GAA finals, Six Nations rugby, and Irish music sessions. Travelers tag it with the Cliffs of Moher, Guinness Storehouse, and Connemara shots.

Coded in Unicode 6.0 from IE, it pairs with shamrock, leprechaun, beer (Guinness), and harp emojis. The massive Irish diaspora across the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK uses it heavily. Often confused with Côte d'Ivoire's flag — same colors, mirrored order.

Meagher first presented the flag in Waterford in 1848 after returning from a visit to France. The flag was rarely used during British rule but was hoisted defiantly during the 1916 Easter Rising at the General Post Office in Dublin, cementing its national status.
